La película fue realizada en su totalidad un año antes de la que finalmente salió y se estrenó mundialmente en los cines: \"El exorcista, el comienzo\" (Exorcist: The Beginning, 2004), dirigida por Renny Harlin. Esta versión (atención a los nombes en los créditos: Paul Scharder, Angelo Badalamenti, Vittorio Storaro...) no gustó a los ejecutivos de la Warner, por lo que fue desestimada para su estreno. Paul Schrader recurrió a los tribunales, y finalmente consiguió su exhibición en los videoclubes y en DVD. Lo cierto es que, sin llegar a ser consideraba -unánimemente- buena, consiguió mejor valoración por parte de crítica y público que la versión estrenada en las salas, también protagonizada por Stellan Skarsgard.
