As humanity adopts biological enhancements in attempts to achieve perfection, a terrorist organization uprises to prevent what could be the eventual extinction of the human race. Two former LAPD SWAT members join a special mech-piloting, military force to take down the leader of the terrorist organization. Appleseed XIII (2011) is the fourth adaptation of the manga by Masamune Shirow (Ghost in the Shell) for the screen. When it appeared in 1988, Shinji Aramaki\'s first animated version felt like a summary of anime\'s past, while Akira pointed the way to the future. The second Appleseed (2004), also directed by Aramaki, was an unimpressive motion capture feature. Appleseed Ex Machina (2007), directed by Aramaki, but produced by John Woo, was more elaborate, flashy, and violent. Director Takayuki Hamana and his crew turn this adaptation into a sort of Beauty and the Beast story between tough-as-press-on-nails ES.W.A.T. agent Deunan and cyborg \"bioroid\" Briareos, a boyfriend-protector-father figure. Although she describes herself as a \"rolls with the punches, ballsy hellcat,\" Deunan isn\'t particularly effective as a defender of Olympus City. The people she\'s assigned to guard keep getting killed. She also ignores orders, rashly takes on enemies single-handedly, and squabbles endlessly with Briareos.
