Founding SML members Hugh Hopper (bass), John Etheridge (guitar), John Marshall (drums) and the late Elton Dean (sax / electric piano) combine to deliver six open-ended compositions. This is a sizzling set, where structure serves as but a framework for intrepidly expanding the possibilities of fusion, while remaining undeniably accessible.
Despite this being the band\'s debut performance, there is obviously very special chemistry at work with these seasoned veterans. The music is inspired -- the occasion finding the musicians in top form, their playing bristling with unrestrained energy.
Live in Zaandam shows that the spirit of Soft Machine is still alive and well, and is in good and capable hands. Essential listening for all fans of fusion and these progressive music legends.
Recorded live on May 10, 2005 at De Kade, Zaandam, Holland.
