Hollywood Utopia applies a range of interdisciplinary strategies to trace the evolution of ecological representations in Hollywood film from 1950s to the present. Popular science fiction, westerns, nature and road movies are extensively analysed while privileging ecological moments of sublime expression often dramatized in the closing moments of these films.
Pat Brereton lectures on a range of film and new media courses within the School of Communications at Dublin City University. He is the author of Continuum Guide to Media Education and has edited Convergence: Journal of New Media.

By Stephen A. Rust on March 6, 2013
Hollywood Utopia argues that Hollywood films since at least the 1950s have been an important site for viewers to engage with environmental issues. Brereton calls our attention not only to films with obvious environmental themes like Soylent Green and Logan\'s Run but also to films where ecology bubbles up from beneath the surface, as in Titanic. The book is expansive and thought provoking and a lynchpin in the growing field of ecocinema studies
